Boston Green Academy has plans to move to South Boston from its current location in Brighton beginning the 2028-2029 school year. 

The school is expected to relocate to the South Boston Education Complex, according to a letter sent to BGA families on July 23. Signed by BGA principal Matt Holzer and BPS Superintendent Mary Skipper, the letter also states that the district will work on a design plan during the upcoming year. 

The South Boston Education Complex was the previous site of Excel High School before BPS closed the school this past June. According to the district website, the location is currently being scoped for a decarbonization project and other upgrades.

“The South Boston Education Complex is one of the district’s largest school facilities and will provide the right space to fit the needs of our school community,” wrote Holzer and Skipper in the letter.

According to the letter, BGA and BPS administrators hosted a Zoom meeting with BGA parents this past Thursday to discuss several focus areas, including transportation options for students after the move to South Boston.

It is unclear what are BPS’s plans for the building once BGA intends to vacate in 2028. 

A spokesperson for BPS declined to comment for this story, stating that they were still in “very early stages of the project.”

BGA, which is an in-district charter school focused on sustainability, has been a part of the Brighton neighborhood since 2014. As of the 2025-2026 academic year, the school has 450 students from seventh to twelfth grade.

The relocation of BGA will leave Brighton High School as the only high school in the Allston-Brighton neighborhood, which currently has five elementary schools. The Mary Lyon Pilot High School closed its doors at the end of last year as part of a district-wide consolidation.

BPS officials and BGA’s principal Holzer write that there will be more meetings to come in August and September to provide updates and gather feedback from families about the move.
